Throwback Thursday

Another edition of Throwback Thursday. This time we're back in 1989, in the city of Nîmes. Ken took my picture on the street. This trip was special for many reasons, but I particularly remember checking into the hotel in Nîmes. When the woman checking us in learned that we were American, after listening to Ken's French, she actually took two steps backward. She was so surprised that an American could speak such good French.

Straddling the gutter in Nîmes.

The other memorable part of that hotel was that the room was huge, with very high ceilings. The bathroom was partitioned off, but the walls didn't go all the way up to the ceiling. Whatever you did in the bathroom was heard in the entire room.

  1. That's a great story and a cool photo. Unfortunately, after hours and hours of studying the French driver's Code, my eyes first focused on that car that appears to be parked over a solid yellow line, on the sidewalk, in front of a no parking sign. Oops. Maybe that was your car.

  2. Well, now, that's a funny little bathroom anecdote for a Thursday morning, Walt. Thanks for that. ;)

  3. Oh, I would NOT have done well in that bathroom! Although, after 8 years with Jerry at that time, I MIGHT have considered not making him leave the hotel room when I used the bathroom. So glad to see you were not IN the gutter.

  6. Cute photo! I have fond memories of walking around Nîmes!

The room story is very coincidental: my daughter rented from Airb&b a small house in the Dordogne a couple of weeks ago. One large bedroom had been divided into 2, the walls just like you said, did not go all the way up to the ceiling. When one side turned the light on, it lit up the entire larger room. UGH! not to my liking!

  7. We've been "treated" to two rooms like that, one in the middle of France some years ago, and the other in March, in Dunedin, New Zealand. The Dunedin room had *curtains* around the pot and the shower, nothing else! The owner was very proud of the room because it had been recently updated. Yuck.
