Medieval Microsoft

Windows. What did you expect? Macs weren't discovered by Europeans until the nineteenth century. In Ontario, Canada. By John MacIntosh, for whom they are named.

The view down below has changed since the 15th century.

But seriously, folks, these are openings in the wall of the medieval castle at Loches. Much more of the castle survives than just the donjon tower. The Round Tower is more intact and contains exhibits and a model of the what the entire castle is thought to have looked like. And there are only 102 steps up to the terrace level.

This may have been the first appearance of the "blue screen of death."

At ground level there are more exhibits as well as a cool medieval style vegetable and herb garden inside the walls. The ramparts themselves are explorable as they're riddled with passageways that lead to strategic military posts from which defenders could shoot arrows.

And don't forget the gift shop on your way out.

Today is la Chandeleur, or Candlemas, and we will be making and eating the traditional crêpes for lunch.

  1. I love pancakes !! We often have them sprinkled with sugar and orange juice, just like when we were kids.

We have our pancakes on Pancake Day - Shrove Tuesday, 16th Feb. Will you be having them again then ?

  2. Jean, most Americans don't celebrate Shrove Tuesday or Pancake Tuesday. We don't have the tradition. We don't observe Lent. Sounds like a good excuse to have pancakes twice in February though.

  3. "A la Chandeleur, l'hiver finit ou reprend rigueur."

Word verification is uncule. I really don't know what to do with that?

  4. Our Furry forecasters predict 6 more weeks of winter weather. The shadows of Ontario's Wiarton Willie, Nova Scotia's Shubenacadie Sam and Punxsutawney Phil in Pennsylvania were all spotted by their owners today- Groundhog Day

  5. Bill Gates actually stole Windows from Apple because they had neglected to patent/copyright their inventions. These are great photos, what a clever idea to take pictures through the windows.

  6. By the way, have you ever had a crispy crêpe?

  8. The part of Pennsylvania where I grew up marks the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday as Fastnacht day. We eat fresh doughnuts--preferably yeast-raised, preferably made with potatoes--and call them fastnachts. They're the best doughnuts you'll ever eat!

Word verifiction is "graes," which must mean "lard."

  9. jean, like Ken said, most Americans don't celebrate Shrove Tuesday, except for when they call it Mardi Gras! But there's more going on than pancakes...

chm, um, I have no suggestions...

beaver, if there were groundhogs in France, at least where we live, no shadows would have been seen.

starman, thanks. No, I don't think I've ever had a crispy crêpe. What are they like?

mama stress, I'm certain that there are Americans who do as well, especially the catholics as it's the day before lent begins.

    carolyn, those fastnachts sound good!
